Research Assistant

The Department of International Health is seeking a casualResearch Assistant with a quantitative background to work across multiple research projects under the broad topics of maternal and child nutrition and humanitarian health led by Dr. Nadia Akseer. These projects could include (1) a validation and cohort study to assess multiple micronutrient supplementation adherence among Ethiopian women, (2) a mixed-methods study to determine the drivers, determinants, and trends of maternal and child wasting in Ethiopia, (3) a prospective cohort study to estimate the rates and risk factors of wasting relapse among children under-5 in Somalia, and more.

The Research Assistant will support throughout the research process, in efforts to design appropriate methodology, implement the research study according to protocol, analyze data, interpret findings, write-up and disseminate results, and liaise with partners/funders including in-country collaborators. They will also be involved in project coordination (e.g., facilitating partner meetings and sharing meeting minutes) and administrative duties (e.g., tracking budget expenditures).

Mentorship and supervision will be provided by IH / GDEC / IIP faculty Dr. Nadia Akseer and Dr. Emily Keats.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate project teams, including facilitating recurring meetings and providing meeting notes.
  • Support protocol development and IRB applications.
  • Conduct literature reviews.
  • Support data management and cleaning.
  • Support descriptive and advanced quantitative analysis.
  • Support qualitative data collection and analysis.
  • Contribute to interpretation of results and write-up for reports, manuscripts, and/or meetings (presentations).
  • Join regular and ad hoc team meetings with research team.
  • Assist with other research-related activities and proposal writing.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience in quantitative data management and analysis using relevant software (e.g., excel, access, RedCap, STATA, R etc.).
  • Must demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be highly organized with attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work independently, complete tasks on time, and identify issues to proactively bring to mentors and wider team.
  • Project coordination/management experience.
  • Intermediate-level proficiency in cleaning and managing quantitative datasets.
  • Intermediate-level proficiency in descriptive data analyses (e.g., univariate and bivariate statistics).
  • Experience or interest in learning advanced data analysis techniques such as predictive modeling, creating composite scores, decomposition etc.
  • Proficiency in using statistical package with a preference for STATA and/or R.
  • Understanding of public health nutrition interventions and their measurement.
  • Strong written communication skills in English.
  • Experience working in cross-cultural teams in LMIC setting(s).


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • MSPH, MPH, MSc or higher.
